Surat Ya-Sin: Ibn ʿAshur’s Commentary

This sample surah heralds the production of a landmark contribution to the fields of Quran translation and exegesis in English, and a project which balances the authority of tradition with the needs of a modern readership. The author, Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn ʿAshur (1879–1973), adjudicates between the great minds of the past, emphasising the richness of Quranic meanings, and is unafraid to offer his own interpretations.

The work of abridging this voluminous masterpiece – rather, of crafting a condensed English-language presentation based upon its insights – is being undertaken by a team specialised in tafsir. This sample displays some of the best features found in existing Quran translations, along with a whole new approach to incorporating the master-exegete’s insights into a layered translations, arranged in headed paragraphs and supplemented by footnotes.
